Direct Mail Formats

Direct Mail Formats Chosen for the Message, Audience, and Campaign

Compare postcards, snap packs, and custom mailers based on the offer, amount of information, desired recipient experience, audience, quantity, production requirements, postal specifications, and budget. No single format is right for every campaign.

How to Choose a Direct Mail Format

Start with the customer and the message, not the dimensions. Ask:

  • How quickly should the recipient understand the offer?
  • How much explanation, proof, or disclosure is required?
  • Should the message be visible immediately or revealed after opening?
  • Will the piece use variable information or multiple versions?
  • What quantities, markets, postal rules, schedule, and budget apply?
  • Which response path will the recipient use?

BlackJet can compare the options after those requirements are defined.

6×9 Postcards

A 6×9 postcard provides a practical amount of space for a strong visual, focused headline, concise offer, approved proof, essential terms, and a clear call to action. The message is visible without an opening step.

May fit: service introductions, appointment or consultation offers, approved events, community or destination promotion, and other messages that can be explained concisely.

Plan for: front/back information hierarchy, address and postal area, image quality, legibility, stock/finish, quantity, proofing, and response tracking.

6×11 Postcards

A 6×11 postcard provides additional space for imagery, supporting information, disclosures, versions, and multiple response options. The larger surface can be useful when the offer needs more explanation, but size alone does not guarantee performance.

May fit: higher-consideration services, travel imagery, senior living introductions, healthcare events or consultations, and home improvement messages requiring more detail.

Plan for: content prioritization, readability, postal specifications, stock/finish, quantity, approved claims, and a focused call to action.

Snap Packs and Check Snap Packs

Snap packs are folded pieces sealed along perforated edges. The recipient tears the edges to reveal the interior message. A check snap pack uses truthful check- or voucher-style creative as part of the offer.

May fit: offers needing interior space, a structured reveal, variable information, qualification details, or additional disclosures.

Plan for: exterior and interior message sequence, folds and perforation, variable data, fallback values, proofing, sealing, postal requirements, and legal/compliance review of check-style creative.

Custom Direct Mail Formats

A custom piece may use a different size, fold, stock, enclosure, or presentation. It should solve a defined communication or production need—not be different for its own sake.

May fit: messages requiring additional panels, premium presentation, unusual information hierarchy, or production specifications not met by standard options.

Plan for: engineering, prototypes, proofs, stock availability, finishing, handwork, variable data, postage, schedule, and QA. BlackJet should confirm the production approach before the client relies on a date or cost.

Beyond the Format

Format Is One Part of Campaign Performance

The same format can produce different outcomes with different audiences, offers, creative, timing, and follow-up. Evaluate the complete campaign: audience fit, message clarity, response path, lead quality, sales handling, and full cost.
